Favorite Things

I have photographed hundreds of newborns and therefore been in hundreds of nurseries before I was even a Mom.  I felt like it was such an “insiders benefit” to see what items Moms selected for their nurseries and ask them what they loved and what wasn’t working.

When it was time to choose items for our son’s nursery, I knew EXACTLY what I was going to splurge on and what I was going to skip.  A definitive yes to a $129 changing pad – expensive, yes, but 110% worth it.  With no cover, there is never a mess you can’t just wipe up and move on.  An easy no to the diaper pail.  No matter how much you spend on one of those, it’s a stinky mess that no one would want in their bedroom.

By saving on things that were unnecessary, I was able to splurge on great products and still save money in the end.  I have put the list below together for you in hopes to pass this information on to all my clients and friends.  Leave me a note below or send me an email if you have any tips or tricks that you’d like to share.  We all do better when we learn from each other!

The hands down best changing pad on the planet.  Saves you money because you will not need to purchase and launder covers, it fits on a standard dresser so you do not need to purchase a special changing table and it will last you through all your children (even grandchildren).  This is a durable material with a smart and safe design!  No brainer!

I have it in grey since I wanted it to last through multiple generations, but there are colors to match every nursery!

Finding a rocking chair was super hard for me!  I knew that I wanted one, the one I wanted was a million and ten dollars, and I knew that I would never use a rocking chair once I was out of the nursery years.  I didn’t want to sacrifice the floor space for a stool, but wanted to be able to lean back and put my feet up.   It also had to fit my frame as well as my much taller husband.  I searched every furniture store in Chicago, and then I walked into a clients nursery and sat in this chair.  Perfectly neutral grey, soft and durable microsuede, and so very comfortable!  I was sold before I knew the price and that is the real kicker.  I was able to find it for $260 online.  Add a cute throw pillow and drape a quilt over the back and the chair is on theme no matter where it is.  This chair has kept us comfortable through nursing, rocking, and story time for 3 years.

Another item I knew I wanted to splurge on was a crib mattress.  After obsessively reading about SIDs risk factors, it seems that most of them revolve around the sleeping environment.  Although researchers cannot pin down a cause, their research shows that a firm mattress with low fumes and nothing in the bed with baby is best.  This organic crib mattress had absolutely no “off gassing” when we pulled it out of the packaging.  We bought it a few months early to let it “air out”, but I would have been comfortable letting our son sleep on it right out of the box.  Our son LOVES his crib and I credit this mattress as the reason why.  It is so comfortable.

Feeding baby is a personal journey and no two Moms I meet feel exactly the same way about it.  Various bottles work for various stages or various babies.  Some supplement with formula from the beginning, some exclusively pump, breastfeeding came naturally, it was more painful than having the baby, and everything in between.  The only thing that my research showed and my clients confirmed was that, if I was going to pump and feed baby breast milk from a bottle, warming it up “low and slow” was the best way to keep all the “good stuff” alive and well.  The Kiinde Kozii bottle warmer is the choice of myself and many clients for just that reason.  If you do not plan to pump, you do not need a bottle warmer.  If you plan to breast feed and then switch to formula, you do not need to spend this amount on a bottle warmer.  If you plan to use your bottle warmer for formula only, there are some great ones that have sanitizing features for pacifiers and bottle nipples!  But, if you are going to endure pumping, keeping all those breast milk benefits is a must!

The hooded towel might be the most adorable baby product of them all!  The sweetest snuggles of the day can come from a warm little duck, giraffe or elephant after bath time.  Those hooded baby towels are adorable, and you should definitely buy one, but after they outgrow them, which will around 6 months, snag one of these from IKEA if you can!  This STÄNKA hooded baby towel is absorbent, big enough for a toddler, super soft and durable.

Teething was one of the hardest times for my little guy.  His teeth came in fast and furious, which meant we always needed to have a teething toy and a bib.  I received one of these adorable little chew toys for free at a parenting conference I photographed and it quickly rose to the top as his favorite.  I have bought it for tons of friends since and they all say the same.

These drool bibs are infinitely cuter than standard bibs and with a drooly, teething baby, they became an outfit staple for us.  We received so many compliments and he always seemed so comfortable in them because of their loose 2 snap fit.  Add one of these and save yourself then constant shirt changes throughout the day.  They will catch the drool and spit up, then you only need to change the bandana.  There are tons of patterns to choose from, but we found that these Zippy brand ones had the softest lining, washed up nicely, and had 2 snaps for 2 sizes based on baby’s neck size.

Wipes are only good if they are wet and handy.  This wipes dispenser leaves nothing to be desired.  We’ve been gone for weeks at a time and when we get back the wipes in this dispenser are fresh and ready.  It has never molded.  It has never dried out.  It never lets me down, even when I am working one handed!

Do not be fooled by a similar looking OXO dispenser in a grey color – it is not for standard baby wipes.

Don’t spend a penny more on burp cloths.  One package of these was more than enough to last me through the “spit up” stage.  They are super absorbent, easy to wash, and small enough to be handy, but large enough to cover your shoulder.  Plus, if you’re an oldest child/grandchild, you might remember these from your own childhood.  Nostalgia and babies go together like peas and carrots!

The best baby shower gifts when there is no registry or you want to add a personal touch to your gift –

This is the perfect gift for a First Birthday party, a shower, or for yourself!  This birthday book is the baby book that keeps on giving.  It is soooo easy to fill out. Throughout the year I fill that year’s pocket with keepsakes such as a birthday party invitation, a copy of that year’s holiday card, event tickets, artwork, and snapshots. Once a year, you pull this book out and fill out the corresponding birthday pages.  I always know where to file that little memory and what a treasure to remember a childhood full of memories!

This beautifully illustrated book is a close second.  My son loves the story and the drawings.  When we get to the end, he often wants to turn it over and read it again.

Full disclosure – the links above are affiliate links and I will earn a tiny amount of money if you click and buy – however, all of the above products are things that I learned about from another Mom, own and love!  I bought each and everyone of these things for myself when our son was teeny tiny and they made motherhood better, easier, happier.

I made my original registry on Buy Buy Baby, but I quickly found that they did not have all of the products I wanted, so I searched for a registry option that would allow me to add products from anywhere and I found Amazon.  My family is spread from coast to coast, so with Amazon they knew they could easily buy and ship online or they could see the specific product and find it elsewhere.  If that sounds great to you, sign up below (I’ll receive a small kickback when you do) and get shopping! :  )
